I decided that I am going to start making some computer related tutorials starting with ....
How to create a Virtual Machine
OK, so sometimes I get asked the question "Can I put an operating system inside of an operating system?" and the answer is yes, with virtualization. And in this example I will be downloading ubuntu into a virtual machine.
Requirements:
an operating system (ubuntu is free)
2 GB of member (3GB recommended)
Your CPU must support virtualization and it must be turned on.
virtual machine
How to turn on virtualization or to see if your CPU supports it:
www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/configure-bios.aspx
(Couldn't be arsed writing a tutorial on that since all systems are different).
1. In this example I am using ubuntu, so first we have to install ubuntu from here
2. Install Oracle Virtual Machine
3. When virtualbox finishes installing open it.
4. Go to New, next, name the machine, in the Operating system dropdown pick linux, in version pick ubuntu.
5. Click next, ubuntu requires at least 512MB of RAM however since I have 3GB to spare I'll give it 1GB, give it as much as you would like, then click next.
6. select "create new hard disk" then next
7. choose VDI then click next (should be the default)
8. Choose dynamically allocated, then next
9. Ubuntu requires 5GB of Harddrive space, but for this tutorial I will give it 10GB since I will be installing Google Chrome and other applications, choose your desired amount. then click next
10. Click create both times it pops up, and the Virtual Machine is set up, however nothing is installed on it yet, double click the machine to open it.
11. when you open run through the "first startup wizard"
12. when everything pops up just click ok
13. You will now get the error "No bootable medium found, so now we have to install ubuntu.
14. In the top tool bar go to Devices - CD/DVD Devices - and choose choose virtual CD/DVD disk file
15. Now browse to where you installed ubuntu and select it.
16. Now go to Machine - Reset and the machine will reset, when the machine resets the ubuntu installation should start.
17. When the installation finishes go to Devices - Install Guest additions. this will allow the Virtual Machine to interact with the real machine and you can then view the machine in full screen like it's your real operating system.
And now you have an operating system inside of an operating system, of course if you wanted to install Windows 7 or whatever from a disk file when you start up the virtual machine it should automatically begin the installation.
Thanks for reading if you have any problems, questions, or comments feel free to reply .
