Following the 4-2-2 victory for "Back-and-forth" as the debating style and the subsequent conversation, we are nearly ready to start our first debate! The debate will assume the following format: - The person arguing FOR the motion will outline his/her argument. - The person arguing AGAINST the motion will outline his/her argument. - The person arguing FOR the motion will respond to the points made by the 2nd person. - The person arguing AGAINST the motion will respond to the points made by the 1st person. - This will continue for another round. - After 2 back-and-forth rounds, the person arguing FOR the motion has the choice of whether to conclude first or last and conclusions will take place thus. After the first debate is finished, we shall vote on the second debate topic. For brevity's sake, I have just taken a nice easy one from the list to start with. So, without further ado, please sign up to take a side. This can be done either on your own or in a team. I will sit this one out to make sure everything runs smoothly but I promise to take part in the next few debates. --- Debate 1: This House Believes That Abortion Should Be Banned. - Person arguing FOR the motion (abortion should be banned): cloud
- Person arguing AGAINST the motion (abortion should not be banned): [Manic]
--- Once this is done, we can begin

I think this forum is way to open minded to consider the ban of abortions. There will be nobody doing debating for it.

If that's the case and no one signs up for the pro-life side in 48hrs time, I'll hop ships, I believe I can argue from either case.

I think this forum is way to open minded to consider the ban of abortions. There will be nobody doing debating for it. With respect, that misses the point entirely. The whole point of debating is to improve your skills of analysis and building an argument. Whether or not you actually believe in which side you take is irrelevant because you are not expressing your own views but you are adopting a set of views. I hardly think anyone believes that Adolf Hitler was actually a genius but a good debater can put forth a strong argument to that effect. If that's the case and no one signs up for the pro-life side in 48hrs time, I'll hop ships, I believe I can argue from either case. If you could take the pro-life side, [Manic], that would really help. Therefore, I have prematurely added your name to that side on the original post. I am very happy to change that if needs be

Not a problem, like I said I believe I could build an argument from either side, just originally felt like going with the side I actually believed

Awesome, let's start debating then I'll set up the thread - I'm going on holiday on Wednesday so I could do with this one being completed by Tuesday evening, if possible

Might be troublesome considering I'm English and Cloud's Australian, doubt we're going to have many quick replies
