So, ladies and gents, we have quite a substantial list of debate topics in the first thread. BUT! The list of topics has no use if we have no fixed style of debate with which to use them. Therefore, being the democratic society that we are, we give the power to the people and we shall put it to a vote!
Essentially, you can choose from either of the two following types of debate, or for both, or for neither if you have a better suggestion.
Type 1: Back-and-forth
A back-and-forth debate goes like this:
1) The motion is set.
2) The team arguing FOR the motion makes their initial points.
3) The team arguing AGAINST the motion makes their initial points.
4) The team arguing FOR the motion responds to these points.
5) The team arguing AGAINST the motion responds to these points and vice versa for a couple of rounds before a winner is declared.
Type 2: Regimented Structure
1) The thread is created by the adjudicator/referee.
2) The person arguing FOR the motion has 1000 words to outline his/her argument.
3) The person arguing AGAINST the motion replies in kind.
4) Observers throw out questions, which are collated and offered to the two debaters by the adjudicator/referee.
5) The person arguing FOR the motion has 500 words to answer the questions and 200 more words to conclude his/her argument.
6) The person arguing AGAINST the motion has exactly the same afterwards.
7) The winner is decided by poll/popular consent according to who had the more 'persuasive' argument.
-----
Of course, the rules of these are flexible and may change from debate to debate but, until then, get voting! You have three days!
