I doubt anyone remembers the style I used to roleplay in, but it was 20% on topic, 80% story and character development. The main reason I did that was to interest the reader and draw him in which I presumed is what roleplaying was about.
So this is my question, would you rather me do my usual style described above? Or just do the 20% on topic?
The only reason I ask this is because I remember some people didn't really like the way I did it, no matter what you guys say I'll stick to my style but if you do object in any form then I'll try to tone it down to a more 60/40 on topic style.
Does anyone else do this? Which do you think is better? I've always thought the on topic only stuff is a bit dull and generic.

I've always had loads more off topic background stuff for my character. That's how I ended up with long ass rps. Being on topic and talking about the match gets pretty old quick and most of the time you say the same thing over again, especially if it's not a built up feud. Background stuff is pretty cool and you can show why your guy is reacting a certain way to the match, maybe not concentrating, being extra vengeful, etc.

Yeah, but some felt I used to take it too far, I remember once writing a 105k word RP, not sure if it was on this site, but regardless only about 10,000 of that was on topic, and about 10 to 15 thousand words was an average RP. I honestly can say I'll only do that much when I can be bothered, but to the fear of the GM, I have a lot of time on my hands now - uh oh.

Oh man, i'm lazy as hell so I just go straight to the point and that also keeps me more interested in others' RPs . CD is only interesting if you really like somebody's character

CD gets played out. I prefer to keep a CD story going throughout a series of RPs in snippets, mainly because I can't be fucked thinking of new situations

I've always went off that, if you want to develop your character you do it in a series of general roleplays with your match rps more to the point of the match itself with perhaps some background stuff involved.

I never did this much but I agree with it, though the problem is general roleplays are not taken into consideration and if they are lord knows how they will be; though I feel character development in general roleplay may just give you the edge in a match; I like to know Ayens view though, in the sense that does the rp have to be about the match? Or we can write our own harry potter novels and win

For me it depends on the situation, for general roleplays that aren't aimed at anyone in particular I'm all for character development, but when it's for a match I must admit I get annoyed when my opponent writes thousands and thousands of words and when I CTRL + F the word 'Assassin' to see what he's said with regards to our match I get 0 results.

Maybe he misspelled it? Maybe Assassin misspelled it? Even in CD I mentioned the match somewhat. I'd be in development, but the thoughts of the character would be on the match and opponent. Especially if other characters were involved and they'd ask him questions about it.

If I had a background to write off topic on, then that's the route I could go. Most of the stuff I did was on topic and it wasn't all random to a key.

Oh yeah, I'm aware sometimes it's misspelled 'Assasin' or something like that, I always make sure I check.

Match RPs should probably be on topic for the most part with a portion dedicated to character development/storyarcs that can potentially be used as fuel. e.g. a wrestler's close family member is in the hospital and all throughout their interview they look distracted and unfocused.
