Battletech: because anime can suck it.
considered the crown jewel of the now defunct FASA corperation, Battletech was one of several beautifully developed and incredibly well written tabletop games by FASA, it featured a far flung future gripped by numerous (but not constant) wars over a large chunk of the milky way galaxy. Noble houses owning massive star empires command the true gods of war, massive battlemechs bristling with weapons and technology. Though the wars for control of the now gone star league were taxing and numerous, nothing was as shocking as the invasion of the Clans, powerful mechwarriors from the distant past, piloting machines so powerful that it was almost like an alien invasion, a nightmare made of flesh and steel.
Then Wizards of the Coast bought FASA and fucked up all their games, and microsoft bought the rights to Mechwarrior: a battletech video game. The first one I played was Mechwarrior 3, and it's age shows but you can't put it down, it's like a flight sim for controls but a very immersive tank shooter in gameplay, moving your mech, pivoting the torso, and letting fly with missiles, laser weaponry and s**t-wrecking autocannons. Mechwarrior 4 was my favorite of the series and the last game to be released officially for over a decade, it streamlined the game and fixed the (in my opinion) stupidly broken multiplayer. Now they've announced a new mechwarrior game as well as Mechwarrior online, which looks free to play and runs off of the computer castrating cry III engine.
These games are legendary, and it's hard to find someone who won't reinstall their copies of mechwarrior 3 or 4 when the need to melt down some madcats hits them. I can't wait for the new Mechwarrior online, wanting to see their approach to balancing 100 tons of realistic mech action in a free to play environment. Anyone here ever gave these games a try? jumped into the cockpit of a Thor and just let fly with the gauss weaponry?
