Hi folks
Has anyone here ever done anything like written a book or a short story? I'm not asking you to share them or anything, but the thing was a couple of years ago I had this idea for a book about four guys (protagonists) whose names actually inspired me (I won't bore you with the details just yet). Basically I saw these four words together and thought "that'd make a great book title", and then amidst my blaze of inspiration and all these crazy visions of fame and fortune promptly forgot all about it.
Fortunately, these four words are located at a place I pass relatively often, and as a result I was constantly thinking "hmmm...."
Anyway, a few months back I decided to bite the bullet, sit down and start writing it. I'm STILL only in the planning stages, creating the characters and their backstories etc, and nowhere near even the plot yet, though I've got an idea of the direction I'd like to take things, however through various work commitments and general writers block things are going VERY slowly indeed.
I was considering places I could talk to people about this and get general writing advice, then I thought why not go to the guys I've known for years who have spent countless hours creating characters and writing about them from their perspective. It's always something that has interested me, so I thought I might share parts of the writing process as I get along here if that would be acceptable.
With my experience as a sports journalist (limited though it is) I feel like I've got my own writing style which has generally seemed to go down fairly well with readers (even if they didn't often agree with what I was saying), and in writing for DXX over the years I feel I've improved in the way I can write characters, so hopefully this is something I can have a good stab at.
I do realise it'll be probably years before my writing ever sees the light of day in novel form (if ever at all), but it's something I'm quite excited to sink my teeth into and get cracking with. I also feel once I've got a better grasp of the plot and characters I should be able to start getting a first draft of things done relatively quickly, it's just getting this thing set up and it's canon history established first off.
