So, yesterday Newcastle sacked Steve McClaren and convinced Rafa Benitez to take over with the club second from bottom of the Premier League and only 10 games in which to haul themselves out of the dreaded drop zone. The deficit is certainly not insurmountable - they are only a point behind rivals Sunderland in 17th, with a game in hand - if Benitez can snatch at least that point from that game then the race is on. Norwich presently sit between the two, only ahead of Newcastle on goal difference, but speaking as a Sunderland supporter I can pretty much sum up my reaction to the news in two simple words. "Oh, shiiiiiiiiiiit" What do you guys reckon? Think the Mags have done themselves a favour and given themselves a fighting chance to survive? I'm certainly a lot less confident that they will be going down now than I was a couple of days ago.

We talked about this in another topic, but my opinion still stands - I think with Benitez Newcastle will, unfortunately for you, stay up at Sunderlands expense.
Then again as an eternal optimist Big Sam has pulled the team out of something of a rut they were in going back to the start of the season, so it won't be easy. As you say if Newcastle can at least get a point from the Leicester game on Monday they're in with a shout, and of course the derby game on the 20th will more than likely be the decider for which of you stays up. As you might say up there it's a focking massive game, like.

It's big s**t, that's what it is!
Yeah, I think the Geordies have got a MAHOOSIVE coup in getting Benitez in, it's a great result for them - he delivers success almost everywhere he goes in one form or another, and while they may not necessarily be looking at delivering trophies just yet I think a bit of stability and solidification would count as a big success up there at the moment.
In fact the derby is such a big game I'll be watching it from the comfort of my dad's B&B up in Scotland, that's how far away I'll be hehe

Benitez delivers in Europe, not in the league, so Newcastle will probably do well in the Championship, lol. Nice riddance Mike Ashley.

Fair point actually, if Newcastle were in the Europa League they'd probably win it.
But still, he took a very average Liverpool team to the pinnacle of European football, he can take a crap Newcastle side and keep them up I reckon.

Maybe. Do you reckon he'll remain in Newcastle if they get relegated?

I read he has a clause that lets him walk away if they're relegated, much like Shearer did when he tried to keep them up in 2009 I think.

It's a weird dynamic at the moment, Newcastle fans are saying "we are going down, not Sunderland" and Sunderland fans are saying "we are going down, not Newcastle" so time will only tell, at the very least though I think the Mags have given themselves the best chance bringing Rafa in personally
